Oxidation Studies

Artist Statement

In Oxidation Studies I am intrigued by the fluid nature of water, and how it acts as a soluble agent in both watercolor paintng and oxidation. Having previously worked with rust as a means for staining canvas, I am now interested in reversing this approach by emulating the process of oxidation through the medium of watercolor.

I regard these pieces as playful meditations on various dichotomies -- artificial vs. natural, gestural vs. sedentary, and abstraction vs. realism. I particularly enjoy how the layering technique of watercolor can simulate the natural qualities of oxidation -- a lengthy process that watercolor can evoke in much less time. I also enjoy how the gestural immediacy of watercolor contrasts with the sedentary nature of oxidation.
